Abbas Husein al-Tai was born in Mosul in 1945 and graduated from a teacher training college. He started practicing calligraphy with Yousif Thanoon in 1962 and received from him his ijazah (authorization of exercising and teaching calligraphy). He also received a certificate of appreciation from Sayyid Ibrahim and Hamid Aytaç. He taught calligraphy and related arts at Mosul University.
