About Artist
Eda Funda Özkan is an artist born in Üsküdar, Istanbul. She graduated from Istanbul University’s Faculty of Literature in 2000. During her university years, she was introduced to the art of Ebru (marbling) at Küçükayasofya and received letter of approbation from Fuad Başar.
While preparing her thesis on bookbinding in Turkish-Islamic arts, she became captivated by the art of illumination (tezhip) at the Suleymaniye Library and continued her studies in this field, learning from various renowned teachers. She further enhanced her skills with a restoration course at the Goethe Institute.
In 2009, Özkan started taking painting lessons from Ilhami Atalay.
She continued her art education with courses in modern art at the University of London in 2011 and in painting and fine arts at Chelsea Art College in 2013.
In 2014, she worked as an art instructor for a short period at the Turkish Cultural Center in Jerusalem.
In 2016, she led Hilye-i Şerif seminars in four cities across the United States. The Al-Madina Institute in Washington, D.C., recognized her as one of the “Top Ten People to Know.”
Özkan has participated in numerous exhibitions in Turkey and abroad, receiving various awards. Her works are featured in private collections and museums.
She successfully completed her goal of creating 100 Hilye-i Şerifs. In 2022, she held her first solo exhibition, titled “AYNA” (MIRROR), where she presented 51 traditional and modern works, drawing significant attention.
Having completed her 111th Hilye, Özkan continues her artistic journey at Pembe Kapı Art Studio for as long as life allows.
