Hocazâde Alî Efendi
About Artist
Born in Tarnovo as the son of Ahmed Efendi, he was known by the epithet "Hocazade" due to his father's profession. After completing his education in his hometown, he went to Istanbul to attend a madrasa. During his studies, he developed an interest in calligraphy and began studying thuluth and naskh scripts under the famous calligrapher Isma’il Zühdi Efendi. After receiving his ijazah, Hocazade Ali Efendi taught calligraphy in schools and also dedicated his time to transcribing the Qur'an and other books. He passed away in this state. The date and place of his death are not known.

Tarihsiz Kur‘an-ı Kerim’i görülmüş olan Hocazade Ali Efendi’nin, H. 1209 ile 1210 yılları arasında (M. 1794-1796) ta’likle istinsah etmiş olduğu risale mecmu’ası Ankara’daki Milli Kütüphane’de(A. 4558) bulunmaktadır. Ta’likteki üstadı hakkında bir bilgiye ulaşılamamıştır.
