Professor
Dr. Nihad Dukhan is a Palestinian-American Arabic and Islamic calligraphy
artist. He was born in Gaza, Palestine
and migrated to the United States of America in 1983 to study engineering. He received a PhD in mechanical engineering
from University of Toledo in Ohio in 1996.
His interest in
Arabic calligraphy began when he was in the sixth grade. To polish his training in the classical
styles of calligraphy, he traveled to Istanbul in 1998 and started studying
with the noted Istanbul grand master calligrapher Hasan Çelebi. In 2009 he received his İcazatname
(master of calligraphy degree) in Sülüs and Nasih styles from Hasan Çelebi
after 11 years of study. In 2006 he became a student of master calligrapher Mohamed
Zakariya in Talik style, and received another İcazatname in April 2013 in Talik.
During his studies with Master Çelebi,
he received instructions from Efdaluddin Kılıç, He lived in Istanbul in 2013 to 2015,
and received advanced training under guidance of Master Calligraphers Davud
Bektaş in Jeli Sülüs style and Mustafa Parıldar in Jeli Talik style. He has been receiving informal calligraphy
advice from Ahmed Fares.
His work
has been exhibited in major US cities, Istanbul, Algiers, Sharjah and
Kuwait. He exhibited and delivered
lectures about Islamic/Arabic calligraphy in many universities such as Loyola
University (Chicago), University of Detroit Mercy (Detroit), Istanbul Technical
University (Istanbul), University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Appalachian State
University (Boone) and George Washington University (Washington, DC), The
Ohio State University (Columbus), Florida State University (Tallahassee), University of Puerto Rico
(Mayaguez) and Grand Valley State University (Grand
Rapids).
His
artwork is sold in the US,
Europe, the Middle East and Japan. His commissioned designs include company

Dukhan
is active in promoting the art of Arabic/Islamic calligraphy and increasing
people’s awareness of its cultural, religious and artistic significance through
exhibits, lectures and workshops. His
intent is not only to attract people who are familiar with the Arabic alphabet,
but also to penetrate barriers and touch other languages and cultures.
Dukhan
is currently a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Detroit
Mercy in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
