Salah al-Deen Sherzad was born in Kirkuk
in 1948. He completed his undergradute
studies at University of Baghdad and
obtained his doctoral degree in the field
of history of Islamic Art from the İstanbul
University. He started learning calligraphy
under the tutelage of Abdulgani al-
Ani and Hashim al-Baghdadi and later
pursued his studies with Hamid Aytaç
from whom he obtained his certificate.
Meanwhile he learnt the principles of
drawing miniatures and deepened his
knowledge in illumination. He worked
in the UAE Ministry of Education, then
as lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts,
University of Sharjah. Sherzad is the
co-founder of the Iraqi Calligraphers
Association and also of the Calligraphy
Group within the Emirates Association
of Fine Arts. He was the managing editör
of the Hroof Arabiya journal and was
awarded numerous orders by the Iraqi
Prime Ministry, Ministry of Culture,
University of Baghdad-Faculty of Fine Arts
and Cultural Center for his achievements
in and contributions to the art of
calligraphy. He served as a jury member
in calligraphy competitions. Currently
he is a faculty member at Fatih Sultan
Mehmet Vakıf University, Istanbul.
